From 2023-24, the NBA is introducing an in-season tournament named the NBA Cup that will be played between November and December every year. Today we go into the tournament format, including groups, rules and teams.
A typical NBA regular season sees each team play 82 games of basketball. The new tournament is designed to occupy the middle part of the season, and all the games played will be incorporated within each team's 82-game regular season.
NBA in-season tournament explained
The 2023 tournament will kick off on November 3rd, involving all 30 NBA teams. They will be split into six groups of five teams each. The top two teams in each group will proceed to the knockout stages and a tournament phase from the quarter-finals to the finals.

The six groups are divided in terms of location. The Western Conference has three groups, and the Eastern Conference has three.

NBA in-season tournament bracket
The bracket for the NBA in-season tournament 2023 will see all 6 group winners proceed to the quarter-finals. The six best second-placed teams will go into two conference-based groups and play against each other, with each group winner qualifying for the quarter-finals. From then onwards, the tournament will continue in a knockout format with quarterfinals, semifinals and an eventual final played at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on December 9th.

In the 2023-24 season, the tournament will begin on November 3rd 2023 and end officially on December 9th 2023. The group stage games will take place exclusively on Tuesdays and Fridays. The semifinals will be played on December 7th, two days before the final. Unlike the average NBA playoffs, which uses a 7-game series to determine the winner, the final is a one-off game.

The NBA in-season tournament championship trophy is named the NBA Cup. The award deviates from past NBA trophies previously named after famous figures such as Larry Bird and Larry O'Brien.

The competition has several financial incentives for players based on how far up their team finishes. The bonuses will increase as advertising income from the team become bigger.

The NBA in-season tournament is set to invigorate the NBA regular season, interrupting the monotony of multiple regular season games. It remains to be seen whether it will pick up among fans and players just like the Play-in tournament introduced in 2021.
