Victor Wembanyama recently hit the headlines for the wrong reasons less than two weeks after he was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. His security guard allegedly struck pop star Britney Spears while approaching a basketball star.

The singer hit herself in the face after she was blocked by the security guard, according to Las Vegas police. No charges were filed against the guard. The San Antonio Spurs star has spoken about the incident.

In a video released by TMZ, a man blocked Spears as she tried to tap the 19-year-old on the shoulder as he strolled through a hotel complex. As the guard pushed the singer's hand off Wembanyama, she hit herself in the face.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a statement acknowledging the incident, saying the investigation was over.

"...concluded its investigation" and that "no charges will be filed against the person involved."

Spears released a lengthy statement on Instagram to address the incident.

"Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them. I was not prepared for what happened to me last night...I decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success. It was really loud, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention," she said

The French phenom is in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League. He says he didn't know it was Spears.

"I didn't know for a couple hours, but when I came back to the hotel... I thought it was no big deal, and then security of the Spurs told me it was Britney Spears," Wembanyama said. "At first, I was like, 'You're joking,' but yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears. I never saw her face. I just kept walking straight," via Cassidy Hubbarth.

Wembanyama was the star attraction in the NBA Draft last month. He received a hero's welcome as he landed in San Antonio for the first time since the draft.

The Spurs big man also had dinner with Spurs legends Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Manu Ginobili on Friday night. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich and former Spurs player Sean Elliott were also present.

Reactions to Wemby's Summer League debut

Sports Brief earlier reported on fans blasting Wembanyama for an underwhelming performance in his debut in the NBA Summer League.

He failed to live up to the hype, scoring just nine points in the Spurs’ 76-68 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Wembanyama struggled with his stroke, shooting just 2 of 13 from the field, including 1 of 6 from beyond the arc, in 27 minutes of action.
