  • The Los Angeles Clippers have waived veteran guard Eric Gordon
  • After waiving him, the Clippers saved $110m in tax payments
  • Gordon had a one year $21 million left in his contract

The Los Angeles Clippers are not guaranteeing Eric Gordon his $21 million contract for the 2023-24 season. The decision could save $110 million for the franchise in tax payments

Gordon joined the Clippers last year in a midseason trade that saw John Wall traded to the Houston Rockets. The 6th man averaged 11 points per game, shooting 42.3% from deep in 22 games as the Clippers lost in the first round. He regressed in the postseason, averaging 10.2 points and 34.5% from three-point range.

According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, the Clippers were set to owe as much as $169m in luxury tax, a figure that will now drop to around $59m.

The 2017 6th man of the year has one year left in his $75.5m deal he signed with the Rockets. The contract included three years and guaranteed $54.65m.

Who will replace Gordon?

Young guards Terance Mann and Bones Hyland have shown flashes of brilliance and will hope to see more playing time. Clippers president of basketball Lawrence Frank said the team would like to bring back veteran point guard Russell Westbrook but can only do that with their $3.8-million non-Bird exception, per ESPN.

Gordon's ability to stretch the floor and guard multiple positions will be attractive for many teams looking to sign a veteran on a minimum deal. Teams like the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers are possible destinations for the 34-year-old.

George wants Westbrook to win

Sports Brief earlier reported on Paul George saying he wants Westbrook to win an NBA title. Despite winning the 2017 MVP award, Westbrook's career has spiraled.

After leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, the nine-time All-Star is now playing for his fourth team in as many years.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 All-Star weekend, George praised his former teammate and said he would love to see him win the NBA title.
