The Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, in partnership with BodyArmor, opened the court and revealed new murals of Kobe and Gianna on Friday, June 18, in Compton.

The court is painted Lakers purple and gold with a white logo at the center, and is engraved with the names of Kobe and Gianna. Sloe, a Los Angeles artist, painted the murals, according to Orange County Register.

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, and WNBA legend Lisa Leslie were in attendance.

Venessa Bryant revealed they were planning on building a community basketball court for years.

"For years we’ve been trying to build a basketball court in a public space in L.A."

Young is a BodyArmor-sponsored athlete and is one of many NBA stars who grew up idolizing Kobe.

"I’m excited and honored to be a part of this," Young said. "I remember being a part of certain courts and just being able to get better at my game on these courts."

Earlier this year, Natalia Bryant, Kobe's eldest child, delivered a moving speech as her family unveiled Kobe's handprints at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, per People.

Bryant's murals continue to inspire

On January 26, the basketball world mourned the third anniversary of Bryant's untimely demise. He died with his daughter, Gianna, and seven others in a helicopter crash in 2020.

Since his tragic death, the basketball icon has been honored worldwide. Murals of Bryant and Gianna were painted on streets and courts to eternalize them both.

Even in death, his influence still endures. From LA to the Philippines, artists worldwide have painted murals of Bryant and Gianna to honor them, as Sports Brief reported.
