NBA players with dreads: Who has the best locks in the league right now?
NBADraymond Green Declines Player Option for 2023/24, Set to Become Unrestricted Free Agent
- Draymond Green has declined his $27.6 million player option for the 2023-24 season and will become an unrestricted free agent
- Golden State Warriors reportedly expected the veteran forward to opt out
- Green can negotiate a new deal with the Warriors, explore sign-and-trades, and free agency
The idea of Draymond Green playing for another NBA team other than the Golden State Warriors is unthinkable, but that may soon become a reality after he declined his $27.6 million player option for the 2023-24 season.
Green will become an unrestricted free agent and can negotiate with the Warriors and explore sign and trade possibilities, as well as talk to other teams.
According to the Athletic's Shams Charania, Green and the Warriors are interested in a reunion despite him punching his teammate, Jordan Poole, in October.
The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year has been a vital player for the Warriors dynasty, and coach Steve Kerr said the team cannot contend without the veteran forward. The four-time NBA champion averaged 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game last season.
What motivated Green's decision?
Green is 33 and sees this as an opportunity to land a big money deal, the last in his career. The decision to opt out indicates that he expects to get around $27.6 million or more for several seasons.
Getting Green back will be Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s first task as General Manager after taking over from Bob Myers. Green has played his entire career with the Warriors and recently said he wants to finish his career with the Warriors, per NBC Sports.
How much are the seven-time NBA champions willing to pay Green?
Green was expected to leave the Warriors following his physical altercation with Poole, which certainly affected the team's performances on the court, per ESPN.
Green says Warriors dynasty not over
Sports Brief earlier reported on Green saying the Warriors dynasty is not over yet.
The core of Curry (35), Thompson (33), and Green (33) are not getting any younger but Green is confident they still have a lot left in the tank.
"Great, they’re always wrong. It’s not,” Green said.
