  • Wembanyama is expected to be selected No. 1 overall in next week's 2023 NBA Draft

As the 2023 NBA Draft edges closer, more attention has been directed at Victor Wembanyama, who is expected to be selected No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama is currently playing in the LNB Pro A championship in France.

However, he had a rare underwhelming performance in Game 1 for his Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92, who suffered an 87-64 blowout loss to AS Monaco Basket.

In the contest, the towering Frenchman finished the game with only eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, seven rebounds, a pair of assists, and one block.

Metropolitans 92 were down 52-21 at halftime following a 29-6 run by Monaco and trailed by 34 points by halftime, per Bleacher Report.

Wembanyama's team entered the contest as the underdog since Monaco were the top seed and had swept Mets 92 in the regular season. The last time the 7-foot-5 big man was held single digits in scoring was when Mets 92 faced Monaco in early April.

Wembanyama set for draft #1

The 2023 NBA Draft is scheduled for June 22, meaning before the end of the month, it will be known where Wembanyama will land. He has been tipped to be selected as the No.1 pick by the San Antonio Spurs, who won the Draft Lottery last month.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the most hyped prospects since LeBron James in 2003. His rare combination of size, skill, and defensive versatility gives him a chance to become one of the best players in NBA history, per CBS Sports.

Wembanyama on France-Spurs connection

Sports Brief earlier reported on Wembanyama explaining the special connection France share with the San Antonio Spurs.

Boris Diaw and Tony Parker won titles with the Spurs, with Parker claiming four titles and Finals MVP honors in 2007.

Wembanyama confirmed there was a special relation and said most - if not all - of France wanted the Spurs to pick first.
