Victor Wembanyama is preparing to join NBA next season.

The 19-year-old Frenchman is regarded as the best draft prospect in NBA history and will enter the NBA with plenty of expectations.

Although he doesn't have a preferred destination, the Spurs are a popular team in France because national basketball legends, Boris Diaw and Tony Parker won titles in San Antonio. Therefore, teaming up with iconic coach Gregg Popovich is a match made in heaven, per CBS Sports.

After learning the Spurs won the lottery, Wembanyama, agents, and family were delighted with the outcome.

Wembanyama NBA goals

Even though the 2023 NBA Draft takes place next month, Wembanyama is ready to get to work, and his priority is lifting the Larry O'Brien trophy.

"I'm trying to win a ring ASAP," he said. "So get ready," via Bleacher Report.

The towering Frenchman averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks per game for the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans, all of which led the league.

At 7-foot-5, he is considered a generational talent. He can create his own shot off the dribble, shoot step-back threes and protect the rim, per ESPN.

San Antonio owns the No. 1 pick in the draft for the third time in franchise history. The two other times, the team selected David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997.

This is the third time that the Spurs have had the No. 1 overall pick. The first was in 1987, when they selected David Robinson, and the second was in 1997 when they chose Tim Duncan. The two went on to be franchise icons, and many expect Wembanyama to lead the Spurs back to the top.

Wembanyama on France-Spurs connection

Sports Brief earlier reported on Wembanyama explaining the special connection France share with the Spurs.

Tony Parker and Boris Diaw won titles with the Spurs. Parker won four titles with the Spurs and received Finals MVP honors in 2007.

"There's a special relation between France and the Spurs because of Tony [Parker] of course, and also Boris [Diaw] I know half of the country, if not the whole country, wanted the Spurs to have the first pick"
