The Minnesota Timberwolves ended their 2022/23 NBA regular season with a vital win but the work on the court was overshadowed by Rudy Gobert punching teammate, Kyle Anderson during a timeout.

The Frenchman was sent home after his actions and the Wolves still managed to secure an important 113-108 over the New Orleans Pelicans.

They will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the play-in tournament.

According to ESPN, Anderson reportedly told Gobert to block some shots to which Gobert responded by telling Anderson to grab a rebound.

Things got out of hand when the Frenchman lost his temper, punching his teammate in the chest and telling him to 'shut the [expletive] up'.

The two continued with their argument in the second half but it did not become physical.

Gobert apologizes for punching Anderson

Timberwolves president, Tim Connelly said in a statement that Gobert's behavior was unacceptable.

"We made the decision to send Rudy Gobert home after the incident in the second quarter. His behavior on the bench was unacceptable and we will handle the situation internally," Connelly said via CBS Sports.

The former Utah Jazz center could be suspended by the team.

He later apologized via Twitter:

"Emotions got the best of me today. I should not have reacted the way [I] did regardless of what was said. I [want to] apologize to the fans, the organisation and particularly to Kyle, who is someone that [I] truly love and respect as a teammate."

Anderson said they will move on but it is not the first time someone has taken a shot at him.

"We'll move forward. We want to win games. It is what it is. We'll keep it in house. I mean, it ain't the first time someone has swung on me. I think our tempers just flared. That's all. It is what it is. We'll speak about it and move on. We're grown men."

It is unclear if Gobert will play in the Timberwolves' Western Conference play-in game at the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

Gobert accuses NBA of conspiring

Sports Brief earlier reported on Gobert accusing NBA referees of conspiring against his team after they lost 107-100 to the Phoenix Suns.

He accused officials of unfair officiating in the Wolves recent games, claiming the association wanted to see top stars in the playoffs.

"I think you want to see [Kevin Durant] in the playoffs, Steph [Curry] in the playoffs, you want to see LeBron in the playoffs. The Timberwolves are not there yet."
