Joel Embiid has secured the 2022/23 scoring season despite not playing the Philadephia 76ers' Friday night overtime win vs. the Atlanta Hawks.
Luka Doncic was the only player who could catch Embiid, but his season ended with 13 points after playing only 13 minutes for the Dallas Mavericks, who decided to tank.
The center is also a contender for the MVP award and currently leads the NBA MVP ladder ahead of reigning MVP Nikola Jokic.
Embiid is averaging 33.1 points per game this season and could become the first African-born player to win the award since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1994. He finished second in MVP voting in the past two seasons behind the Denver Nuggets center.

Embiid secures scoring title
Doncic will finish the season averaging 32.4 points per game. Embiid, meanwhile, can't finish worse than 32.6.
Last season, he became the first center since Shaquille O'Neal in the 199/2000 season to win the scoring title. This season he becomes the first center to win two straight scoring since Bob McAdoo, who won it three straight times from 1974-76, per CBS Sports.

Curry on MVP race
Sports Brief earlier reported on Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry weighing in on the MVP race between Embiid and Jokic.
The two-time winner of the award in 2015 and 2016 said Embiid has the edge over Jokic and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"Joel took a leap that I think a lot of people didn't expect because he was dominant already...That leap turned heads and put [the Philadelphia 76ers] in a great position. If I had to pick, it would be him."
