  • Kyrie Irving played his first game for the Dallas Mavericks with co-star Luka Doncic against the Sacramento Kings
  • However, they couldn't lift their team to victory as they lost 128-133

NBA fans finally saw Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving play together for the Dallas Mavericks. They did play together against the Sacramento Kings but couldn't pull off the win against the third-best team in the Western Conference.

Irving joined last year's Western Conference finalists in a blockbuster trade from the Brooklyn Nets last week. With Doncic sidelines with a minor injury, the 2016 NBA champion was made to wait for the 23-year-old.

The Kings had lost the first of a back-to-back against Jason Kidd's team but All-Stars De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonmic made sure they won this time around. They secured a narrow 133-128 overtime victory.

Irving and Doncic scored a combined 55 points. Doncic admitted he was tired towards the end. He was scoreless in the fourth quarter and made one layup with five seconds remaining, according to CBS Sports.

Doncic reacts to Irving pairing

Despite losing the game, the MVP candidate said playing with the 8x All-Star was fun but it is still a learning process as they develop some chemistry.

"It's only our first game together, but it's so fun to play with this guy. He's an amazing basketball player, and I think it's going to be really fun. First game, it was really fun," via ESPN.

The 23-year-old star regretted taking a potential game-tying contested stepback three-pointer. Irving carried the scoring load for the Mavs as Doncic struggled in the fourth quarter and overtime. Irving had no problem with Doncic taking the shot.

"No pressure in terms of 'give me the ball' in that situation if he feels confident enough to take the shot. ... If he would have passed it to me, it may be a different result, maybe not. But the what-ifs don't matter."

The 30-year-old star scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Doncic on playing with Irving

Sports Brief earlier reported on Doncic explaining how he will play alongside Irving who signed from the Nets a week ago.

He acknowledged that he has never played with a ball-dominant player like the former Cleveland Cavaliers guard. He added that he is ready to play off the ball to accommodate him.

He heaped praise on Irving, calling him the best ballhandler in the sport.
