  • The defending NBA champions were hoping to bring back Payotn to improve their defense

The Golden State Warriors fans were excited to finally get back Gary Payton II but the deal that brought him back is at risk after the guard failed a physical.

The 30-year-old was set to join the defending NBA champions following a four-team trade involving the Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers in jeopardy.

The failed physical is a microcosm of the Warriors' season. Stephen Curry can't stay healthy, Andrew Wiggins is struggling to replicate last season's performances and the team can't close games.

They are struggling to string runs together. This season it has always been one step forward and two steps back. Several teams in the Western Conference have improved their rosters significantly meaning they could be in trouble if they make the postseason.

Payton fails medical

Payton, who won the NBA title with the Warriors last season could miss two-to-three months after a muscle issue was discovered in his physical on Friday 10tyh February, per the Athletic.

Therefore, the Warriors have until Saturday to go through with the deal or rescind the entire deal. No amendments can be made to the deal after last Thursday's trade deadline.

The full trade had the Warriors sending no. 2 draft pick James Wiseman to the Pistons for Saddiq Bey and Kevin Knox, and the Hawks sending five second-round picks to the Warriors for Bey. Then the Warriors sent Knox and those second-round picks to the Trail Blazers for Payton, per ESPN.

According to the Athletic, there have been discussions behind closed doors about amending the deal but the number of teams involved complicates matters.

Multiple reports indicate he has been playing through pain, and Blazers staff gave him Toradol shots.

The guard had abdominal surgery in the summer, which forced him to miss the first 35 games of the regular season. He was a win-now move from the Warriors but the latest discovery may see the deal fall apart.

Payton has two years and $17.8 million remaining on his contract after this season. He signed a three-year, $26.1 million deal with the Blazers in free agency.

Winners and losers from NBA trade deadline

Sports Brief earlier reported on the trade deadline winners and losers, which ended almost 24 hours ago.

The Suns are obvious winners as they acquired Durant. The Lakers obviously got better. They added shooting, size and versatility.

The Mavericks improved offensively but it remains to be seen if they can survive without great defense.

The Brooklyn Nets lost two elite players in Durant and Irving, therefore they got worse. The Nuggets, who are top of the West may now have to go through the likes of Curry, Durant and James to get to the finals.
