The Boston Celtics exacted revenge on the Golden State Warriors as they beat them in their first clash in Boston after Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals.

The Celtics, though sloppy during the game won 121-118 against a determined Warriors team. MVP candidate Jayson Tatum, who put up 34 points, downplayed talks that the game was a rematch of last season's finals.

After four straight defeats to the seven-time NBA champions dating to last year's NBA Finals, the Celtics finally vanquished the only team that's given them nightmares in the last few months.

It was a gutsy win for the Celtics. They thought they had the game wrapped up at the end of overtime but a few inexplicable mistakes saw their eight-point lead evaporate to three.

However, since the Warriors had no timeout, they couldn't advance the ball to get a shot off with four seconds left to play, per CBS Sports. The Celtics had earlier played in San Francisco last month ago where they lost 123-107.

Tatum on Celtics mentality for the game

Tatum, who is a serious MVP candidate this season, said they went into the game against the defending champions to play them like a normal game as opposed to a rematch of the 2022 Finals, per NBC Sports.

"So we didn't look at this as a rematch of the Finals. It's just one game against a great team with great players and obviously a great coach. But it was just one game. Whether we won or lost tonight, we didn't celebrate or hang a banner or anything."

Tatum scored 34 points on 9-for-27, grabbed 19 rebounds and added 6 assists. Still, he committed a game-high seven turnovers.

Although the Celtics can't do anything about the Finals, Tatum believes they are hoping to be ready come the playoffs in April, per ESPN.

"I think that just shows the depth of our team, that on a below-average night for us, we can still find a way to win.

Joe Mazzulla's side have now won eight straight games.

Tatum opens up on NBA Finals

Sports Brief earlier reported on Tatum explaining what the 2022 NBA Finals loss taught him.

Tatum revealed that playing in the final was tough, especially coming up against hardened veterans like Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

He said he now knows what it's like to play in the finals and he feels he knows what he has to do if he gets to that point again.
