Billionaire Mark Cuban has revealed the moment he decided to buy 2011 NBA champions Dallas Mavericks.

The 62-year-old bought the team in January 2000 and had to wait 11 years to win the championship. Since then, they are yet to play in another NBA Finals but with Luka Doncic, things are looking up.

Cuban bought the team for $285 million in January 2000. The team didn't have instant success though but his ownership transformed the team since he arrived.

Since he bought the team, the Mavericks have only missed the playoffs five times in 23 seasons and won the 2011 NBA title, with a team led by iconic NBA player Dirk Nowitzki.

Why Cuban bought the Mavericks

According to CNBC, Cuban decided to buy the team after watching the franchise he loves struggle to make the playoffs for close to ten years. He said he could do a better job.

At that time, he had sold Broadcast.com, to Yahoo for $5.7 billion in April 1999. Therefore, he had money to spend, according to Boardroom.

"I can do a better job than this because the guy who owned it didn't care about basketball at all. You know what I just made all this money I can put my money where my mouth is and within six weeks it was a done deal and everybody thought I was an idiot."

The move from Cuban proved to be a masterstroke since the team is now valued at $2.7 billion, ninth best in the NBA, according to Forbes.

Mavericks icon nominated for HOF

Sports Brief earlier reported on Dirk Nowitzki being nominated for the 2023 basketball Hall of Fame.

Nowitzki remains one of the greatest NBA players after his long and successful career with the Mavericks where he led them to the 2011 Finals and stunned the MIami Heat juggernaut.

The 2007 MVP is sixth in all-time points scored behind legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
