The renowned professional golfer's father was born to Miles and Maude Carter in Manhattan, Kansas, in the United States of America. Although he was raised in a low-income family, he attended Manhattan High School before joining and graduating from Kansas State University.

His father was a street cleaner, while his mother, despite her education, was a maid. When he was a bit older, his father and mother died, and in doing so, he was taken in and raised by Hattie Bell, his elder sister.

During his early years, the renowned legend played baseball for team Kansas State University. In doing so, he went down in history as the first Black-American baseball player in the sport's conference history.

Due to his race, he faced many challenges in his career. He thus turned down offers to play and decided to continue with his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology.

After school, he joined the army, went on two Vietnam combat tours, and was later an instructor of military science and Tactics at the City College of New York. The famed legend retired in 1974 and went on to become a golf coach to his son, Tiger.
