The Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Banyana Banyana of South Africa will open their account at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against each other on Monday, July 4.

Nigeria and South Africa rekindle their rivalry in football, and this time it will be the ladies who will go to war in making their respective nations proud.

It is their opening game of Group C at the 12th edition of the tournament ongoing in Morocco.

The Super Falcons have won the tournament a staggering nine times and will be gunning for their tenth title.

Recalling that it was Banyana Banyana that defeated the Super Falcons right 4-2 right on their home soil to win the first edition of Aisha Buhari Women’s Tournament held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Coaches speak

Punch reports that Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum expects a tough match:

“Naturally, this is a very big game and we are looking forward to it. It is also a game that should be a good advertisement for African women's football. When you have Nigeria playing South Africa at the senior women's level, it is a treat."

Banyana Banya coach Desiree Ellis wants her team to start the competition on a good note, and believes the ladies will not disappoint.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Ellis emphasized the importance of getting a good result in the opening game of the competition and praised their opponents.

Ellis said, as per Soccer Laduma:

“It’s all about the three points at the moment and getting the tournament to a good start.
“The first game of the tournament is always the biggest game and this makes it even better because it’s against defending champions Nigeria and because it is Nigeria, the game is bigger than what it is supposed to be."

What time is the match?

Nigeria vs South Africa AWCON 2022 match is slated for Monday, July 4 and kick-off time is 18.00 GMT.

It’s 6 pm local time in Nigeria and 7 pm local time in South Africa.

Ajibade shows off her training routine

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Falcons striker, Rashidat Ajibade has taken her preparations for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations several notches higher after showcasing her training routines on social media.

The 22-year-old attacker has been named amongst 32 players invited by Super Falcons Head Coach Randy Waldrum to Nigeria’s camp for the AWCON which will be hosted by Morocco.

Ajibade could be seen taking some boxing drills as well as also joggling the ball simultaneously as she tries to keep fit for the upcoming competition.
