A former Nigerian international Karibe Ojigwe has been sworn in as the commissioner for sports in Abia state, The Cable reports.
Governor of the state Okezie Ikpeazu swore Ojigwe in as the new commissioner for sports in his state in a ceremony which had other 26 commissioners.
The well-attended event held in Umuahia on Tuesday as Ikpeazu said the new commissioners were selected to support and better the lives of Abia state residents.
The governor urged the newly appointed commissioners to take the move as a call to duty and warned that none of them should take advantage of their respective positions for personal benefit.
Born on December 11, 1976, Ojigwe began his footballing career with Enyimba in 1993 and was impressive for the People’s Elephants before his move to Europe.
In 1995, he moved to Germany where he joined FC Kaiserslautern before moving to Koln FC on loan in the 1999/2000 season.
After a turn of form with the Bundesliga 2 side, Ojigwe refused to return to his parent club and instead moved to Champions League participant Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a transfer fee of about €1.75 million.
At Leverkusen, he was part of the squad who narrowly lost the 2001/2002 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid in Glasgow.
How Ojigwe was nominated
It was earlier reported that Ojigwe was nominated alongside 26 others as commissioner nominees by Abia state governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
Other names on the list of prospective commissioners in the southern state are Donatus Okorie, a former secretary to the state government; Godwin Ndom, ex-deputy chairman, Bende LGA; Okezie Erondu, former chairman, Aba South LGA.

FootballAlso nominated for a role by the governor are Prof Ikechi Mgbeoji, former commissioner for education; Mrs. Uwaoma Olewengwa, ex-commissioner for women affairs; Prince Christopher O.Enweremadu, former Speaker, Abia House of Assembly; Charles Esonu; Chinagorom Nwankpa; Monday Ajaegbu, Sopuruchi Bekee, and Rose Urenta.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Nwankwo Kanu and Daniel Amokachi linked up in Abuja celebrating World Heart Day as free medical tests were given to the public.
The Super Eagles legends won gold together at the Atlanta 96' Olympics and were teammates at the France 98' World Cup.
Amokachi was one of the participants who had free medical check-ups as he was surrounded by fans who took photos and made videos of the former Everton striker.
