Ahead of their round of 16 clash against Tunisia, President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Super Eagles to make it four wins out of four at the ongoing AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
Buhari, who revealed that the Super Eagles have been making Nigerians proud, urge the team to go all the way to the final and bring home the title.
The Nigerian president said this while giving the team a pep talk on Sunday, January 23, via video conference ahead of their game against Tunisia.
In a video posted on Super Eagles Twitter handle, Buhari particularly mentioned two of the Super Eagles stars who have really impressed him. They are Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon.
He then urged the Super Eagles to continue making Nigerians happy.
Buhari was quoted as saying: “You’ve been doing Nigeria proud. You’ve been winning. Please keep on winning. The Federal Government is supporting you, and I say thank you to all the technical crew and the players. Please keep doing the country proud.”
Interim coach of the team Augustine Eguavoen and captain Ahmed Musa thereafter thanked the president for taking out time to call the team, even as they assured that the Super Eagles won’t let Nigeria down.
Eguavoen wins AFCON 2021’s group stage best manager award
Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has been named the best manager of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 group stage, CAF has disclosed.
This comes after Eguavoen led Nigeria to 3 wins out of 3, scoring six goals and conceding just once in the process.
Tension in Super Eagles camp as NFF President Pinnick makes huge statement concerning Eguavoen wages
FootballNigeria were the only nation to qualify to the knockout stage with a 100% record with Eguavoen at the helms of affairs.
In doing so, the 56-year-old, who won the AFCON 1994 edition as a player, equalled his own record set in 2006 as the only coach to win all three games in the group stage at AFCON.
Remarkably, Eguavoen got the Super Eagles job on an interim basis just a few weeks to the start of the AFCON in Cameroon.
