- President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for progressing into the next round at the ongoing AFCON in Cameroon
- Nigeria defeated Ginea-Bissau 2-0 courtesy goals from Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong to finish the group stage with 9 points
- The Super Eagles had earlier defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt and Sudan to emerge as Group D winners
President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles for progressing to the knockout round of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Nigeria had emerged as Group D winners after bagging victories in all three games following wins against Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau.
Augustine Eguavoen had made eight changes to the Super Eagles starting line-up in Nigeria’s final group game against the Djurters of Guinea-Bissau but that didn’t deter the Eagles from putting up a solid display to emerge victorious with Sadiq Umar and Troost-Ekong finding the back of the net for Nigeria to seal yet another win.
The Super Eagles have now progressed to the Round of 16 and await their next opponent when the next round resumes.
Meanwhile, President Buhari has joined Nigerians in celebrating the Super Eagles' success so far and has encouraged the team to maintain and even surpass the terrific form that made them leaders in the group stage.
Buhari, in a statement issued Wednesday on Facebook, assured the Super Eagles of his unflinching support as they write another chapter in the history of Nigerian football.
Congratulations to our Super Eagles on winning all their three games and advancing to the second round of the AFCON in grand style.
I urge them to maintain and even surpass the terrific form that has made them leaders in the group stage, and to remain good ambassadors of Nigeria on and off the field.

Sadiq Umar who missed a handful of chances opened the scoring of the encounter having found the back of the net in the 56th minute.
William Troost-Ekong sealed the win for the three-time champion having tucked home from close range as it ended in a 2-0 for the Eagles.
