Former captain of the Super Eagles Austin Jay Jay Okocha is feeling bullish about Nigeria’s chances in putting up a decent performance at this year’s African Cup of Nations.
The tournament kick-starts in Cameroon on Sunday, January 9 with the host nation the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon squaring up against Burkina Faso for the opening game.
Nigeria however will wait till Tuesday, January 11, to take on North African heavyweights Egypt led by Liverpool forward Mohammed Salah and Austin Okocha who was speaking to The Guardian has called for Nigerians not to panic siting the Super Eagles have enough good talents to prevent the former AS Roma forward from causing havoc.
“Salah is one of the biggest stars that will be on parade in Cameroon,”
“But also remember that the Super Eagles is loaded with top stars. We have players who can cage Salah, even, if it means deploying two players to mark him out. The first match matters a lot for Nigeria, and I know that coach Austin Eguavoean will want to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians.”
Okocha has been appointed a member of the Technical Support Group recently put in place by the Nigeria Football Federation to help the Super Eagles campaign in Cameroon.
Nigeria arrived in the Cameroonian city of Garoua on Wednesday, January 5, with 25 players but will be missing key forwards in Odion Ighalo, Victor Osimhen, and Emmanuel Dennis who have all been left out of the team due to club versus country issues.
Nigeria has been paired alongside Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau in Group D.
