European Super League: Everything You Need to Know About Proposed New Format

Nearly two years after it was sensationally rubbished, European Super League (ESL) organisers are now gearing towards launching a new version of the controversial project.

A22, a company based in Madrid, has been tasked with bringing to life the ESL and recently broke down what the league will be all about.

In 2021, there was a 12-club proposal that was brutally shut down as a result of public outcry.

But two years on, A22 chief executive, Bernd Reichart revealed plans are underway to revamp the ESL because European football foundations 'are in danger of collapsing'.

"It's time for a change. It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football," he said as quoted by the BBC.

According to a report by The Athletic, there will be no permanent members of the new-look league, as was initially the plan in 2021.

Rather, the league would seek to follow a multi-divisional format which would comprise 60-80 teams, with each team playing a minimum of 14 games per season.

A22 is believed to have already had a detailed conversation with various European teams about the proposed league and the financial issues some clubs have faced in recent times.

The ESL also seeks to address this problem.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remain the three main clubs that are seriously pushing for a European Super League.

ESL versus new Champions League

The entire ESL concept continues to receive heavy resistance from both FIFA and UEFA - two bodies that have received significant backing in their bid to block the new competition.

La Liga president, Javier Tebas has been vocal on social media, deeming the proposed league 'a wolf disguised as a granny'.

"But his nose and his teeth are very big. Four divisions in Europe? Of course, the first for them, as in the 2019 reform. Governed by the clubs? Of course, only the big ones," Tebas said on social media.

Interestingly, UEFA appeared to have come up with its own measures to rival the ESL in 2022, with major changes introduced to the Champions League format.

The number of teams in the group stages are set to increase from 32 to 36, as of the 2024-25 campaign.

The biggest similarity to the ESL will be an initial phase containing a league table with all participating teams.
