Modric sets new record

The former Tottenham player is now the first player to play in both the European Championship and World Cup in three different decades.

His first Euros campaign came in 2008, and he has since played in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 editions. His World Cup adventures have come in 2006, 2014 and 2018, with this latest venture perhaps being Modric's last chance of a good run at 37 years of age.

Meanwhile, Croatia will face Canada in their second group game at the 2022 World Cup on Sunday, November 27.

Croatia can't dwell on 2018

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Croatia captain Luka Modric called on his team to set aside memories of their path to the 2018 World Cup final, ahead of their opening game against Morocco in Qatar.

Modric was named player of the tournament four years ago, as Croatia reached the final for the first time before losing 4-2 to France in Moscow.

The Real Madrid midfielder, who won the Ballon d'Or in the same year, is playing at his fourth World Cup - which is being held outside its traditional European summer slot for the first time.

Modric admitted to feeling jittery on the eve of his team's opening game against Morocco, and Argentina's shock defeat by Saudi Arabia means Croatia will be on their guard.
