Real Madrid President Florentino Perez Makes Another Appeal for Super League at Club’s General Assembly

• UEFA can no longer punish the 12 teams who were involved in the formation of the Super League

Real Madrid are not giving up on their calls for a European Super League.

Madrid are part of three teams, alongside Juventus and Barcelona, who are still pushing for the Super League.

Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez is so committed to the new format that he even used the club’s General Assembly to push for it.

“Our beloved sport is ill and losing global leadership. With maximum respect to the national leagues, the big European leagues should offer matches throughout the year, matches that bring the young people back,” Perez said.

He compared European football to American sports and mentioned that TV rights for the NFL were greater than that of the UEFA Champions League.

He added that tennis allowed the top players to compete against each other regularly, to football needed to follow a similar trend.

Perez also took a shot at UEFA’s current tournaments and said that the governing body were increasing the number of games between irrelevant teams.

With the push for the Super League continuing, UEFA has suffered a blow in their attempts to punish the teams spearheading the project.

Due to court action, UEFA can no longer ban Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid from the Champions League.

A Spanish court injunction ruled that UEFA could not sanction the clubs, and their disciplinary case has officially been scrapped.

The nine other founding teams - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid - also escaped punishment.

After receiving backlash over the project, the teams pulled out and agreed on a settlement deal with UEFA, AP News reported.

They agreed to forfeit 5% of their prize money from a single season in European competition. The teams were also going to pay a combined €15 million to benefit children, youth and grassroots football, but no longer have to do this.
