Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt will lock horns in the 47th edition of the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 10 at Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.

The Los Blancos pipped English giants Liverpool 1-0 in the final of the Champions League while Franfurt defeated Glasgow Rangers on penalties to clinch their second Europa/Uefa Cup.

The current Super Cup winners are Chelsea who won in 2021 after beating Villarreal on penalties.

Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Italian powerhouse AC Milan are the most successful teams in the competition, having won the trophy five times each.

FC Barcelona – 5 times

Barcelona are the most successful club to have won the UEFA Super Cup. Alongside AC Milan, the Catalan kings have clinched the trophy five times but they have an edge over the Milan-based side due to their participation.

Barcelona first won the Super Cup in 1992, and subsequently triumphed in 1997, 2009, 2011 and 2015. However, the Blaugrana are the team with most defeats in the competition, losing in 1979, 1982, 1989 and 2006, alongside fellow La Liga side Sevilla.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and Manchester City tactician Pep Guardiola hold the record for most UEFA Super Cup wins by a coach with three trophies each.

AC Milan – 5 times

The Rossoneri have also won the UEFA Super Cup on five occasions in their history. AC Milan won the Super Cup in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003 and 2007. They have tasted defeat twice so far, in 1973 and 1993.

Legendary Milan defender Paolo Maldini, alongside Dani Alves, have won the UEFA Super Cup the most since its inception - five.

The last time Milan won the UEFA Super Cup was in 2007 when they thumped Sevilla 3-1 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

Real Madrid made their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup in 1998 in their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea. Two years later, they suffered yet another loss to Turkish side Galatasaray.

In all, Real Madrid have finished runners-up three times - 1998, 2000 and 2018 and have won the competition on four occasions - 2002, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Liverpool – 4 times

The 2022 UEFA Super Cup winners have secured the UEFA Super four times - 1977, 2002, 2004 and 2019. The Reds defeated German side Hamburg 7-1 on aggregate to win their first UEFA Super Cup in 1977.

Liverpool won their next UEFA Super Cup twenty five years later. They defeated Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to win their fourth Super Cup title in 2019.

Jurgen Klopp's side are the only English team in the list of most successful teams in the Super Cup.

Atletico Madrid is the third most successful Spanish team to have won the Super Cup. The Rojiblancos have clinched three times in their history, and they all happened in the last decade.

Interesting enough, Atletico were able to win the three Super Cups - 2010, 2012 and 2018, despite not winning a single Champions League.

Diego Simeone's side have never lost a Super Cup and have a 100% record in the Super Cup. Atletico won the 2018 Super Cup by beating Real Madrid 4-2 at Le Coq Arena, Tallinn.
