  • Zinedine Zidane scored one of the greatest goals in UEFA Champions League history 20 years ago in the final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen
  • The former France captain smashed home the winner on a quick turn and from a half volley as Real Madrid won the title in 2002
  • Zinedine Zidane won the UEFA Champions League once as a player and three times as coach of Real Madrid

Twenty years after his magnificent winner in the UEFA Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen, former Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane has no words to describe the feeling as he looks back to that day.

Zidane on a quick spin met a cross from Roberto Carlos before half volleying it home for the winner as Real Madrid won the title against the German club.

In a video posted on social media, the legendary footballer said 'it was written' and that goal remains one of his best.

"The winning goal of course is an incredible memory. The cross was perfect. I know that when Roberto Carlos starts going off like that," he started. "It was written.
"I knew when I saw that cross, I would kick the ball with only one touch and that I would not control it. I knew that," he added.
"I was relieved because I was missing this trophy. The Champions League wearing the white Madrid shirt. The biggest club in the world."

Raul gave Real Madrid an eight minute lead in that game on May 15, 2002 but six minutes later Brazilian defender Lucio leveled for the Bundesliga side.

Zidane netted the jaw-dropping winner at the stroke of half time to settle the scores at Hampden Park.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has reportedly turned down offers linking him with the managerial position at Newcastle United.

The Premier League club which was acquired by Saudi-backed consortium last week are currently on the look for a manager to replace Steve Bruce.

SPORTbible are reporting that Zidane has made up his mind not to take up the job at St James’ Park as he is hoping to replace Didier Deschamps as manager of Les Bleus.
