Daily Mail reports that the record was previously held by Gabriel Batistuta, who netted 10 times in the tournament during his illustrious career with the South Americans.

Messi also now holds the record for most assists (nine) by an Argentine at the World Cup, a record that was previously in the custody of Diego Maradona.

What's more - the PSG superstar is the first player to score and assist in four World Cup games.

Additionally, he is now the all-time record appearance maker at the World Cup with an incredible 26 Mundial caps.

Finally, with five goals to his name in Qatar, Messi became the oldest player to score as many goals in a single tournament.
