FootballCAF Confederation Cup: Simba SC Sink Orlando Pirates, Win 1:0 Thanks to a Contentious Penalty Decision
- Simba SC had numerous attempts to kill off the game but failed to finish their chances in the final third
- Former Orlando Pirates player Bernard Morrison won the penalty that led to the only goal in the game
- Orlando Pirates didn’t really threaten the Simba goal and will be looking to play a lot better in the return fixture in Soweto
Simba SC have one foot in the semi-final of the CAF Confederation Cup after they beat Orlando Pirates at home.
Simba took the lead in the second half after a contentious penalty decision. Ironically it was a former Orlando Pirates player, Bernard Morrison, who won the penalty for the home team.
Morrison went down in the box just after the hour mark after a slide tackle from Happy Jele.
Jele claimed he got the ball but the referee pointed at the spot. Morrison funnily enough got up after the tackle and looked at the referee, but collapsed again in pain after seeing that he had won the penalty.
The Video Assistant Referee did have a look at the matter but did not overturn the referee’s original decision.
Pirates’ players were not happy with the decision and neither was Mandla Ncikazi. The Buccaneers co-coach was shown a yellow for arguing with the officials and goalkeeper Richard Ofori was shown a yellow for timewasting.
Shomari Kapombe stepped up and calmly dispatched the ball into the back of the net. Simba held on for the win, but truth be told, were never really threatened by the South African side.
Pirates only had two shots on target in the entire game and neither was too threatening. Simba had their fair share of chances to finish the game off but also lacked that killer instinct.
