  • Italian champions AC Milan made a return to winning ways with an easy victory over Bologna at the Stadio San Siro on Saturday evening
  • Goals from Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud ensured the Rosonerri climb to the top of the Serie A standings with 7 points after three games - joint first with Lazio, Torino and AS Roma
  • Up next for Stefano Pioli's charges is an away trip to Sassuolo on Tuesday, August 30 at the Mapei Stadium

AC Milan took advantage of Inter Milan's slump to defeat to climb to the summit of the league standings with a slim win over Bologna.

Following Milan's draw with Atalanta, the Rosonerris had their work cut out for Bologna. The latter have carved a niche as a banana peel for the big wigs in the Italian Serie A.

With little to no goalmouth action in the opening minutes of the clash at the Stadio San Siro, youngster Charles De Ketelaere took matters into his own hands.

The Belgian midfielder fed highly-sought after Rafael Leao, who picked a pass inside the box before rifling a shot into the bottom left corner to draw first blood for the home side.

Leao's goal spurred Milan on as the home side probed for more but were met with a mixed bag of woeful finishing and strong defensive resistance kept the scoreline unchanged.

Junior Messias came close to doubling the lead for Milan but his shot was too straight as Bologna shot-stopper Skorupski repelled his effort.

With no further additions to the scoreline, referee Manganiello blew his whistle for halftime.

Milan continued from where they left off after recess as former Chelsea and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud notched his first goal of the season while doubling the lead for Stefano Pioli's men after 58 minutes.

A raft of changes took the wind out of the sail for Milan as the pendulum swung in favour of Bologna, who tested Maignan in post for the Red and Blacks.

Yacine Adli went close after unleashing a first-time strike which was excellently repelled by the Bologna keeper.

His effort proved the last goal mouth action as Milan held on to a 2-0 victory

Lazio dents Inter Milan's perfect start to season

In a related article, Sports Brief reported that Inter Milan slumped to their first defeat of the season as Spanish duo Luis Alberto and Pedro Rodriguez guided Lazio to a 3-1 win on Friday which takes the Roman club to the top of Serie A.

It marked another disappointing evening for Inter manager Simone Inzaghi who has yet to pick up a point at the ground he graced as a player for over a decade and where he managed until 2021.

The former Italy striker, instead, had to play second fiddle, as he did last year when Inter were handed another 3-1 defeat, to Maurizio Sarri, the man who replaced him on the Lazio bench.
