FootballRoyal AM Misses the Chance to Solidify Second Place in DStv Premiership in Loss to Maritzburg United
- Royal AM missed out on the opportunity to further cement its hold on the DStv Premiership table's second spot
- Thwihli Thwahla lost 1-0 to their new KwaZulu-Natal rivals Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg
- Thankfully for Royal, Cape Town City was caught in a 0-0 draw against Chippa United, which sees the Cityzens level on points with the Durban side
A 22nd-minute goal by Friday Samu was the difference as Maritzburg United defeated Royal AM at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
The win lifted the People's Team further away from the relegation battle, putting them in 12th place on 27 points. Thwihli Thwahla, meanwhile, missed the chance to make second place truly their own.
The team remained in second place on 45 points despite the defeat. Luckily, this was because Cape Town City had drawn 0-0 earlier in the evening against Chippa United. Both teams are on the same tally, though AM is ahead by virtue of a better goal difference.
Maritzburg United will look to continue rattling up the log table on Saturday early evening when they take on Stellenbosch FC. Royal AM, meanwhile has to wait until 14 May for a date with Golden Arrows.
The team could not take on Orlando Pirates this week as the Buccaneers are on duty in the CAF Confederations Cup in Libya against Al Ahly Tripoli. The date of that particular match has not yet been revealed.
