Southampton will however be proud of their performance, as they constantly threatened United straight down to the final whistle.

It was hardly vintage performance from United, but Erik Ten Hag will certainly be happy with the improvements that have been made, particularly in defence.

One notable absentee from the game once again was Harry Maguire, who was relegated on the bench for the second successive game.

Despite a slow start to the game, United eventually grew in confidence and forced goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu into three stunning saves in one move.

There was also a moment of controversy during the game as Scott McTominay seemingly handled the ball but it was completely overlooked by the referee to the fury of Southampton players.

Despite a late onslaught, United held on for a crucial win as they temporarily climbed to sixth place after a second straight victory.
