  • Crystal Palace vs Manchester United Premier League meeting ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Red Devils
  • Wilfried Zaha's 37th-minute strike was the only difference as United ended their miserable season with a painful loss
  • Despite the disappointing result, the Old Trafford dwellers will be playing in next season's Europa League following their sixth-place finish

Man United's hopes of ending their miserable 2021/22 season on a positive note were dented after they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, May 22.

The Red Devils were desperate to bounce back to winning ways having suffered a 4-0 heavy loss against Brighton in their last outing.

However, Ralf Rangnick was unable to steer the side back to victory as they fell to a Wilfried Zaha first-half goal.

How Crystal Palace downed Man United

Despite their dominance in the opening exchanges, United had nothing to show for it as they laboured to break Palace's stubborn defence.

The Red Devils' real chance at the goal came inside nine minutes of action when Bruno Fernandes set up Edinson Cavani in what should have been the opener only for the veteran striker to fluff the chance.

Palace quickly settled in soon after and called David de Gea to action a couple of times before Zaha cut across Diogo Dalot, breezed beyond Victor Lindelof before he planted a tidy effort across De Gea to break the deadlock in the 37th minute.

Efforts by United to draw level in the second half proved futile as the home side held firm to claim a deserved victory.

Man United book Europa League spot

Despite United's defeat at Selhurst Park, they were able to book a place in the Europa League next season.

West Ham's defeat against Brighton afforded the Red Devils a sixth-place finish with 58 points.

They will be joining rivals, Arsenal, in the second-tier European football competition.

Man City crowned Premier League champions

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester City have retained the Premier League title following their 3-2 comeback win over Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Pep Guardiola's men nearly lost the title to Liverpool before they came from two goals down to secure a vital win.

Ilkay Gundogan was City's match hero as he netted a brace deep in the second half to inspire the Citizens to an epic win.
