Antonio Conte Fires Warning to New Man United Manager Erik Ten Hag About Premier League

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte poured cold water on the appointment of Eric Ten Hag as the new Manchester United manager by suggesting the Dutchman was not necessarily the solution to the club’s problems.

United on Thursday, April 21 officially announced Ten Hag would take over at the dugout at Old Trafford from next season.

Ten Hag has penned a three-year deal and is set to take over once Ralf Rangnick’s interim tenure comes to an end.

Conte, who was previously linked with the Manchester United job prior to taking charge of Tottenham, had some interesting sentiments when asked to comment on Ten Hag’s impending Premier League spell.

The Italian warned Ten Hag that English football was extremely demanding, and one cannot afford to ‘sleep’ on the job.

He gave the classic example of all the signings Manchester United made in the summer including Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, yet the club still struggled to compete with the big guns.

"It's strange, because last season they had second place and they improved the squad. You are going worse than last season means it's not so easy, especially in England.

"Many teams have to pay attention because in England you can sleep and finish in the relegation zone, or to finish out of Europe."

Conte also added that I England, “competition was very high”.

Ten Hag comes to United with a fairly decent CV, having won two Eredevisie titles with Ajax.

He also led the Dutch club to the Champions League semi final in 2019, where they were eliminated by Tottenham in dramatic fashion.

Tottenham is currently embroiled in an intense race for Champions League football along with United and North London rivals Arsenal.

At the moment, Arsenal are slight favourites to clinch fourth spot on the log, especially after the emphatic 4-2 win over Chelsea in the London derby on Wednesday, April 20.

Ten Hag's promise

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported of how Ten Hag made a promise to bring United back to the club's glory days.

Speaking to the Man United official website, the 52-year-old divulged he will be looking to give his all at Ajax for the remainder of the season but is looking forward to opening a new chapter with the Red Devils who he wants to help win titles.
