Manchester United chiefs have reportedly rejected Erik ten Hag's request to have Steve McClaren as his assistant manager when he start his job at Old Trafford next season.

This latest development comes hours after Manchester United chiefs named the Dutchman as their new coach as Hag will be replacing embattled Ralf Rangnick.

Since Ralf was installed as coach of Manchester United on an interim capacity, the club has not been performing well in all competitions and will also end the ongoing season without a trophy.

United chiefs then decided to hire Erik ten Hag on a three-year deal with the mandate of him changing the fortune of the club and turn things around.

According to the report on Metro, Erik ten Hag wants to bring some members of his coaching crew to Man United, but also wants someone who knows the club very well.

Steve McClaren is not a stranger at Old Trafford as he was assistant manager to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United from 1999 to 2001.

His managerial career began at Middlesbrough in the Premier League where he was from 2001-2006.

Ten Hag was his assistant at FC Twente, where McClaren credits the coach for helping him to the Eridivisie title in his second season.

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Erik ten Hag made a promise to Manchester United fans following his appointment as the club's permanent manager.

Ten Hag's appointment to the Old Trafford role was officially confirmed on Thursday, April 20.

He will take over from Ralf Rangnick who has been in charge in an interim capacity at the end of the season.

The Ajax boss has vowed to steer United back to glory days, revealing he is "absolutely determined" to deliver the long-awaited success for the club.

Hag divulged he will be looking to give his all at Ajax for the remainder of the season but is looking forward to opening a new chapter with the Red Devils who he wants to help win titles.
