United went into the game knowing all too well that a victory against the relegation-threatened side would propel them to within three points of the top four after Spurs slipped up against Brighton.

After a bright start from Norwich, it was United who took the lead early on as a defensive lapse allowed Anthony Elanga to steal the ball deep In opposition territory to feed it to Ronaldo, who had an easy finish.

The Red Devils then made it 2-0 after 32 minutes, this time Ronaldo scoring with a trademark header from a corner.

United were expected to cruise through the game from then, but their defensive frailties were once again exposed as Norwich got one back before the breakthrough Kieran Dowell, who headed in from Teemu Pukki’s cross.

Dean Smith’s side pushed for an equaliser in the second half and, against the run of play, they found it through Pukki, who beat the offside trap to get behind the United defence to slot in off the post.

Norwich’s equaliser sent Old Trafford into a familiar sense of dejavu, as the Red Devils have developed a dangerous habit of dropping points against teams they are traditionally expected to beat.

The game was meandering towards a draw, then up stepped Cristiano Ronaldo once again for his team.

On 76 minutes, the 37-year old smashed a brilliant free kick in off the post to make it 3-2 in what was his first free kick goal for a club in more than two years.

Reaction

After the game, United fans were quick to point out that the team would be at a very different place without the services of their talisman.

Liverpool reach FA Cup semis

Elsewhere, Liverpool reached the FA Cup final as Sadio Mane's double inspired a 3-2 win over Manchester City that kept alive their quadruple bid and shattered their rivals' treble hopes.

Jurgen Klopp's side is chasing an unprecedented clean-sweep of the four major trophies in a single season.

They remain on course to achieve that incredible target after a scintillating first half display in Saturday's semi-final at Wembley.
