Manchester United's Champions League dream has been brought to a halt following their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Round of 16 clash staged at Old Trafford.

Having settled for a 1-1 draw in the reverse tie played at the Wanda Metropolitano, the Tuesday night, March 15, encounter was evenly poised.

However, despite United dominating the early exchanges of the meeting, they paid the ultimate price as they failed to make their dominance count in the final third.

Atletico Madrid punish Man United

Anthony Elanga had United's first chance to score the opener inside 13 minutes of action but was denied by Jan Oblak who was in place to fend off the threat.

Unlike the hosts, Atletico Madrid made their best goalscoring chance count as Renan Lodi rose high to nod home the opener five minutes before the break.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick was forced into a triple substitution after the hour-mark, introducing Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic for Elanga, McTominay and Fernandes.

However, the tactical change failed to bear the desired fruits as the visitors held on to claim a vital win.

The result was enough to see Diego Simeone's men earn a ticket for the quarter-finals on a 2-1 goal aggregate.

Who else has qualified for the last eight?

Atletico Madrid will now be joining a host of teams who have already booked their places in the last eight.

The teams include Liverpool, Man City, Bayern Munich, Benfica, and Real Madrid who eliminated Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will be hoping to see off Lille in the second leg of their last 16 fixture for a chance to progress.

Rangnick speaks on Man United's UCL qualification

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Ralf Rangnick has suggested Manchester United's top four battle with Arsenal could go down the wire.

The two teams have been earmarked as favourites to seal the final Champions League spot at the end of the season.

The Gunners, who currently sit fourth have a one-point advantage over fifth-placed United as the campaign enters its homestretch.
