  • Pep Guardiola has revealed his admiration for former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard
  • The Manchester City boss also apologised for his comments referencing Gerrard's famous slip in 2014
  • Fans however claimed that the manager was trying to deflect attention away from the important matter

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola let his emotions get the better when he referred to former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's famous slip in 2014 at his last press conference.

Rivals are pushing that City be stripped of their titles if found guilty of over 100 FFP breaches. Liverpool will be the biggest beneficiary, with three titles leading Pep to throw a shot at them.

The former Aston Villa manager slipped in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in 2014 to hand over the title to City, and Guardiola jokingly asked if they were responsible for the incident.

Speaking ahead of the must-win top-of-the-table encounter with Arsenal, quoted in a video published on Twitter by Football Daily, he expressed his admiration for the former England international.

“I apologise to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary and stupid comment I made last time I was here. He knows how much I admire him and his career. I am ashamed of myself for what I said,” he said.

He extended the apology to Gerrard's family, his wife and kids, as well as clarifying that he was only trying to defend his club but went too far with putting his name, as reported by Guardian.

Fans' reaction to Guardiola's apologies

Fans in the comments section of the videos applauded his maturity for recalling the statement. In contrast, others claimed he is only deflecting attention away from the important matter, which is the charges.

The content I like. Leadership. His humility is on point.

I can’t lie, his deflection tactics are solid. Drawing attention to some throwaway comments for headlines so the press focus on him and not the investigation.

We knew you were deflecting attention away from the squad baldy .. you’re doing the same now lol

I don’t believe a word that comes out of this guys mouth. I don’t think he does either.

Guardiola's worst transfers

Guardiola's words are not the only things that have missed in the past. The manager has made some bad signings too, as earlier reported by Sports Brief.

The Spaniard has spent about €1.6bn on transfers, and not all of them have worked exactly the way he would have wanted, including embattled defender Benjamin Mendy.

Two of his Barcelona signings, Martin Caceres and Dmytro Chyhrynskyi, failed and were shipped out after just a year.
