  • Manchester City's alleged financial breaches will be decided by an independent commission
  • The Premier League charged the club with over 100 counts of misdemeanour over nine years
  • The commission will be chaired by Murray Rosen KC, who is a lawyer and member of Arsenal

An Arsenal member has been appointed as the head of the independent commission that will look into the financial breaches levelled against Manchester City.

The Premier League has charged the top flight competition's defending champions with close to 100 counts of bending financial rules.

This comes less than two years after Man City were banned from the Champions League by UEFA, before the club appealed and gained a favourable outcome from the Court of Arbitration of Sports.

The current investigation has been ongoing for close to four years, with the alleged breaches happening between 2009 and 2018.

Who's Murray Rosen?

Murray Rosen KC, who lists himself an Arsenal member in his bio, is now set to head the commission that will determine if the Citizens are guilty or not.

As Kaveh Solhekol reports, the lawyer is the chair of the EPL Judicial panel and will be expected to form a three-panel team to listen to submissions from both parties.

The Sun adds that Murray has previously worked on an ad hoc committee that looked into the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on resolution of disputes in sport.

In a rejoinder on January 6, Manchester City released a statement saying:

"Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with."

The punishments City could face

Sports Brief has also reported on Man City being in danger of severe sanctions, should the club be found guilty of financial breaches.

The Citizens are alleged to have breached EPL financial guidelines between 2009 and 2018, according to results of a four-year probe.

The league body has accused its defending champions of violating rules instructing them to provide ‘accurate financial information'.
