Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne has won the Premier League player of the season, beating the likes of golden boot-chasing duo Mohammed Salah and Son Heung Min.
This is the second time in less than three years that the Belgian wins the award, having previously won it in 2020.
De Bruyne’s win also means that for the third season in a row, a Manchester City player has been declared the Player of the season after defender Ruben Dias was feted last year.
The eight-man shortlist for the award featured some familiar names in the Premier League including Joao Cancelo, Trent Alexander-Arnold, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal.
Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, considered one of the best free kick takers in Premier League history, was also among the nominees.
The winner is typically determined through a public vote on the Premier League website, along with votes from club captains in the Premier League as well as a panel of football experts.
Salah was a heavy favorite to win the award, as he is currently leading in goals and assists in the league this season.
But it seems De Bruyne’s four-goal overhaul against Wolverhampton Wanderers recently swung the odds in his favor, as he helped Manchester City regain control of the title race with his goals throughout the campaign.
His goals against Wolves also set a unique record as De Bruyne became the third fastest scorer of a hat trick in the Premier League.
