  • Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants played to a stalemate in the last PSL game before the festive period break
  • Sundowns have dropped points twice this season, once during the Amazulu defeat and now against Gallants
  • Benni McCarthy's curse has affected the Brazilians, commented social media users as Amazulu became the first team to break Sundown's unbeaten streak

Mamelodi Sundowns fans, who were hoping their team would bounce back with a win, were left sorely disappointed when The Brazilians drew with Marumo Gallants.

It was the second time this season that Sundowns dropped points. The first came when Benni McCarthy's Amazulu beat Masandawana 1-0 on Monday night.

Sundowns ended the year with a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants in the PSL, Soccer Laduma reported. Gallants took the lead at the half-hour mark thanks to a penalty. Sundowns lacked that cutting edge and missed a number of good chances before Lesedi Kapinga drew them level with a smart finish in the box.

On their official Twitter page, @Masandawana praised the player for his goal.

Sundowns drop points following Amazulu defeat

Twitter users were quick to point out that Sundowns haven't played with their usual dominance since the game against Benni McCarthy's Amazulu.

@thomasmaleka also commented:

"Sundowns look ordinary after Benni exposed their strength and weaknesses. Gallants used the same ploy and they got the result."

Sundowns remain ahead of Pirates on the league table

Despite Sundowns dropping points, they remain 14 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates. Pirates beat Amazulu, 2-1, to go second on the log.

The Twitterverse didn't waste time in pointing out how ironic it was that Sundowns thrashed Pirates but dropped points to the two teams that Pirates recently beat.

Haters, supporters triggered as Benni McCarthy claims Sundowns won't ever go unbeaten under his watch

The fallout continues as Mzansi tries to wrap its head around how AmaZulu halted the seemingly unstoppable Mamelodi Sundowns train its tracks, Sports Brief previously reported.

Benni McCarthy, the excitable and occasionally foul-mouthed coach of Amazulu, masterminded a 1-0 victory for Usuthu over Masandawana on Monday night in the DStv Premiership.

It was Sundown's first loss in what seemed like forever - 17 games to be exact - proving that AmaZulu finishing as runners-up to the Tshwane-based team was no fluke.
