Al Ahly has been struggling since Pitso Mosimane's departure last June.
The latest setback without the South African at the helm is a humiliating 5-2 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last Saturday in Tshwane, in a CAF Champions League encounter.
This left the Egyptian superclub all but eliminated from this season's competition.
Mosimane's absence has been touched on regularly since he abruptly left Cairo, IOL reported, with a clear link between the team's decline and his departure.

FootballWael Gomaa, a revered club legend who led the incessant and nonsensical criticism of the former coach, gave an interesting take on the situation.
According to KingFut, Gomaa said:
“People will bring back the discussion about Mosimane. I am only talking about football here, but there are other things about him that are beyond the technical aspects of the game, and I don’t want to talk about them.”
Talk about the kettle calling the kettle black; sections of Egyptian media have accused Mamelodi Sundowns of time-wasting, a favourite pastime of North African teams.
This was in the wake of the Brazilians' dramatic 2-2 draw with Al Ahly during a CAF Champions League group encounter in Cairo two weekends ago.
According to IOL, an offended Sundowns head coach, Rhulani Mokwena responded to the accusations with indignation at the post-match press conference.

FootballA grateful Al Ahly SC supporter has gone on social media to shower Mosimane with praise, Sports Brief previously reported.
The South African mentor was a divisive figure at the helm of the senior team despite bringing in trophies almost for fun for the Cairo-based club.
The toxicity played a part in Mosimane's departure last June, but he has stoically refused to admit this was the case.
It just never ends when it comes to Mosimane and his former club, Al Ahly SC in Egypt, Sports Brief also reported.
The South African, who resigned suddenly from the club last June, was hounded even with a section of the fanbase behind him.
The latest furore was sparked by a comment from a legend of the club, Hossam Ghaly, who is now part of the technical team.
