  • Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane wanted him in Egypt
  • After dominating South African football completely, Mosimane was snapped up by the Egyptian giants in late 2020
  • Mokwena was then appointed in Mosimane's place at the Brazilians, with Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela joining him as co-coaches

Rulani Mokwena could have been in the coaching dugout at Al Ahly.

The Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach revealed that Pitso Mosimane tried to take him with to Cairo after he was appointed as the Red Devils' head coach in October 2020 after many years of success with the Brazilians.

However, Mokwena said that he had no regrets about turning this offer down, stating:

“Turning down Al Ahly and coach Pitso in particular was very difficult. “It is not easy to turn coach Pitso down but until today, I think that was the right decision. When I had to tell him that I was going to Pirates, it was hard and it took him a very long time to accept that.

He felt betrayed, rightfully so. I also would have felt the same but turning him down to go to Egypt was even bigger, you can imagine. He is someone I have huge of admiration and respect for. He played a huge role in my career.”

Mosimane recently resigned from Al Ahly unexpectedly, having signed a contract extension earlier this year.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena rubbishes claims that DStv Premiership is a farmers league

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena rubbished talk of the DStv Premiership having become a farmers league.

As reported by Sports Brief, the Brazilians won their record-extending fifth consecutive title last night after a 0-0 draw with Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld. This was also the club's 12th league title in the Premier Soccer League era since it began in 1996, eight ahead of both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which are both on four.

Mokwena said that the chasing pack needed to harden up and intensify its fight for the league to not seem this easy.
