  • Mamelodi Sundowns wrapped up the DStv Premiership title with four games still to go in the season
  • Masandawana hold a 13 point lead over second-place and have scored 13 more goals than the next best team
  • Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to add to their impressive season stats in the remaining four games

Mamelodi Sundowns fans are still raving about their team winning their fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title.

While other clubs find excuses for Masandawana’s dominance, the numbers and stats from their season thus far don’t lie.

Sundowns won their fifth league title in a row and secured their 12th league title since the PSL era began in 1996. The next most successful clubs are the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with four league titles each.

As iDiski Times noted, Sundowns have won more league titles than Pirates, Chiefs, and SuperSport United combined.

Sundowns also wrapped up the title with four games to spare, the earliest this has been done since the 2006 season.

So far, Masandawana has scored 50 goals, 13 more than Royal AM, Sport24 reported. 13 is also the number of points that separate the sides at the moment. 13 also happens to be the biggest margin that the Premier Soccer League has ever been won by, a feat that Sundowns could easily surpass.

Sundowns have also only conceded 14 goals this season, the least of any team in the league. In addition, the record for the fewest games lost in a season is just one game, set by Sundowns. This year the Brazilians have only lost two games.

The record for most points in a season is 71, also set by Sundowns. If they win their remaining four games, Masandawana will get 70 points.

It’s not only the team stats that have been impressive this season; individually, the players have also shone.

Denis Onyango is one clean sheet behind Cape Town City’s Hugo Marques in a race for the golden gloves, while Peter Shalulile leads the race for the golden boot with 21 goals. Shalulile is also closing in on Collins Mbesuma’s record of 25 league goals in a season.

Mamelodi Sundowns Wrap Up Fifth Consecutive League Title, Secure Much Needed Point Against Cape Town City

Mamelodi Sundowns are officially the 2021/22 DStv Premiership Champions. Masandawna achieved the feat by playing out to a goalless draw at home with Cape Town City, Sports Brief earlier reported.

Cape Town City travelled to Loftus Versveld looking to play spoiler and put Mamelodi Sundowns’ title celebrations on hold. Instead, Sundowns went into the encounter, only needing a draw to secure the title.

Masandawana achieved the draw and notched up their fifth consecutive league title and twelfth overall. They will celebrate appropriately on the season's final day when they receive their trophy.
