FootballCAF Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns to Draw on Experience to Overturn Petro De Luanda Deficit
- Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi is confident that his charges can do what they’ve become renowned for and pull off another CAF Champions League comeback
- The Brazilians are currently trailing Angolan side Petro de Luanda 2-1 after the first leg last Sunday in the capital city of Luanda
- However, Mngqithi pointed to various examples in recent years where the Brazilians have dropped the first fixture of a tie, before firing back at home to progress to the next round
There is a lot riding on Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Petro de Luanda on Sunday night.
The Brazilians will go into that match trailing the Angolans after a 2-1 defeat to them last Sunday. This result put the dreams of a Quadruple (DStv Premiership, MTN 8, Nedbank Cup and Champions League) in jeopardy, having already bagged the MTN 8 and a breath away from the League title.
Ever since winning the continent’s biggest club prize for the first time in 2016, Sundowns has become a juggernaut of note in Africa, finding themselves as a permanent fixture at the business end of the competition. Co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi is counting on this prestige and experience to help overturn the deficit.
He told Soccer Laduma when referring to a multitude of comebacks his team has pulled off in Africa:
“We went to AS Otoho and lost 2-1, before we came back and scored three at home. We went to Zesco United where we lost 2-1, and we came from behind to score two. We have done this before.”
“I want to look at what is positive because I gather a lot of strength from positive energy. We believe we have the capacity to do well. We have the experience to come back, and have won a lot of matches, which points to the strength of our team.”
