Midfielder Lebohang Maboe has returned to the Mamelodi Sundowns squad after being months out with a knee injury.
Maboe suffered the injury in August 2021, before the start of the news season, and needed surgery. Doctors told the player that he would be out of action anywhere between six to nine months at that stage.
With games coming quick and fast in three different tournaments, Mamelodi Sundowns were bolstered by the news that Maboe has recovered and is fit to play once again.
Maboe was added to the squad that travelled to Egypt this week ahead of their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League clash against Sudan’s Al-Merrikh, KickOff reported.
The Sudanese team was forced by CAF to play their home games in Egypt, as their stadiums back home did not meet CAF’s standards. Sundowns will play Al-Merrikh this weekend and Al Ahly the following weekend.
As a result, Sundowns will spend the next two weeks in Egypt as they take on the Sudanese team and then face former boss, Pitso Mosimane. The last time Mosimane clashed with his former side, things turned ugly, as a few fans booed and swore Mosimane, Sport24 reported.
Sundowns will go into the clash hoping for further good news on the injury front as they wait for feedback on Gaston Sirino and Pavol Safranko.
Safranko limped off with what appears to be a hamstring strain against Baroka while Sirino suffered a nasal fracture during the team’s first CAF Champions League clash against Al-Hilal.

FootballBaroka FC scored in the dying seconds of their game against Mamelodi Sundowns to steal a point against the Brazilians. Lyle Lakay opened the scoring for Sundowns with a stunning freekick but this was cancelled out by Richard Mbulu.
In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Lakay was in exceptional form and was unlucky to have only scored one goal. Lakay had three freekick chances, striking the post and crossbar with two of them, while he scored with the other.
Lakay also hit the crossbar with a long-range effort in the first half when the game was still goalless. Lakay’s first freekick attempt came on the 25th minute, but despite beating the wall, the ball crashed into the post.
