In terms of stats, however, the two players are neck to neck, with each beating the other in different respects.
This season, however, Messi and Ronaldo seem to be heading in different directions in terms of their performances for their respective clubs.
Messi, 35, seems to have rediscovered his spark after a fairly tame first season at Paris Saint Germain.
His exquisite strike against Benfica in the Champions League put the Argentine on seven goals and eight assists in just 13 games so far this season.
For Ronaldo, he is struggling for game time under Erik Ten Hag and was recently overlooked in the Manchester derby.
Appearing on CBC Sports as a pundit, Carragher spoke once again on the two players as he further emphasized his admiration of Messi.
“He’s the best player that I think all three of us have ever seen,” He said.
“You’ve got greats that have come before - Pele, Johan Cruyff, Maradona. But I would say Lionel Messi is the greatest player to have ever played football.
Why Lionel Messi's Argentina is the team to beat in Qatar as Cristiano Ronaldo becomes liability for Portugal
FootballCarragher went on to point out the fact that Messi’s critics use the lack of a World Cup as a means to discredit the Argentine.
“That may not be universal in everybody’s eyes, because everyone associates that you have to win a World Cup. I would love nothing more in Qatar than for Argentina and Lionel Messi to win the World Cup, just to cement where I see him: as the greatest player to have ever played the game.” He added.
Messi recently took some pressure off himself after winning the Copa America title in July 2021.

According to Football Espana, renowned Italian Journalist, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Barcelona are yet to make an offer for Messi and no agreement has been reached by both parties.
