Gary Neville has thrown a cheeky damper at Liverpool after Mohammed Salah penned a new deal to stay at the club.

The signature put an end to speculation that Liverpool had slapped a price tag on Salah only days after Sadio Mane’s departure.

30-year-old Salah was instantly a hot topic on the internet after the new deal, with fans and pundits weighing in with varying opinions.
But it was Gary Neville’s tweet on Saturday, July 2 that caught the eye of many, as he simply raised a question that aroused some doubt, especially among Liverpool fans.
“Salah has played them, hasn’t he?” Neville tweeted.
Salah’s Liverpool contract saga
It is not difficult to see why the Sky Sport pundit would think Salah scored one over Liverpool with the new deal.
The contract saga has dragged on for at least 12 months, with the Egyptian maestro initially turning down offers from Liverpool.
This had led to speculation that Salah was mainly interested in the money, something he refuted in past interviews.
“I think the fans know what I want, but in the contract it’s not everything about the money at all. So, I don’t know, I can’t tell you exactly. I have one year left and the fans know what I want.” Salah had stated in an interview with Four Four Two in April 2022.

FootballAt the time, he only had one year left on his deal.
Neville's Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher however believes Liverpool did the right thing in succumbing to Salah’s age demands.
"Salah has been as good as anybody in the Premier League or anyone in European football, certainly in his position, and he'll feel he deserves to be paid as well as those. And we know the types of numbers other players get at other clubs," Carragher said on Sky Sports.
Salah’s comments after new Liverpool deal
Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported of Salah’s new ambitions after securing a new deal at Liverpool.
Expressing delight after extending his stay at Liverpool, the reigning FWA Footballer of the Year and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year wants to deepen his legacy at Anfield.
“I feel great and [I am] excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone." Salah told the club's website.
