  • Liverpool held off Newcastle to secure a crucial 1-0 win at Newcastle in the Premier League
  • Naby Keita scored the only goal of the game to send his side above Manchester City, who play Leeds later in the day
  • Klopp had a new set up for the Newcastle clash as he made five changes, with top scorer Mohammed Salah starting on the bench

Liverpool once again sent a statement of intent as another professional performance saw them edge out an in-form Newcastle United 1-0 to temporarily go top of the table.

Naby Keita’s goal in the first proved to be all the Reds needed as the Merseyside club kepts hopes of their quadruple alive.

Newcastle, who came into the game on a four-game winning streak, showed some bravery as they pressed high from early on.

But Liverpool eventually found their feet in the first half, creating chances early on with Keita dragging a shot wide when he had better options.

Keita would make up for his earlier miss in the 19th minute as he exhibited great composure to beat two Newcastle defenders and the goalkeeper to smash home the opener.

Sadio Mane had the chance to double his side’s lead following a swift counter attack, but could only find the goalkeeper with a finesse shot.

The Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka also did well to keep out Diogo Jota’s header in the first half.

In the second half, the Magpies made another positive start, but it was Liverpool once again who had the clearest chance, with Mane once again missing the goal from a few yards out after a brilliant cutback.

It was not the typical scintillating display from Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s men managed to get the job done in the end, as they leapfrogged their arch rivals Manchester City once again.

Notably, Klopp tinkered with his squad, leaving out Mohammed Salah, Thiago and Trent Alexander Arnold from the starting XI.
