FootballEx Kaizer Chiefs Striker Leonardo Castro Exposes Bad Alcohol Drinking Culture at the Amakhosi
- Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Leonardo Castro has pulled back the curtain and exposed the drinking culture at Kaizer Chiefs and South African football in general
- This was not long after another ex-Amakhosi player Daniel Cardoso claimed that some players would arrive at practices drunk
- The duo was part of several players who were let go from the club as it looked to revamp a squad that desperately needs to win a trophy
Former Kaizer Chiefs sharp shooter Leonardo Castro has said that there was a problematic drinking culture at the club that permeates through South African football.
The Colombian was one of many players like Daniel Cardoso, Bernard Parker, Lebogang Manyama and Ramahlwe Mphahlele who were shown the door by the Amakhosi in a large-scale overhaul.
Castro said to Soccer Laduma:
“You cannot hide that South African players like partying and alcohol. It is sad what is happening because alcohol is a problem. Most of these things happen because of the influence of alcohol or any other substances most of the time. People like their drugs or whatever.”

"Some players arrived at Kaizer Chiefs practices drunk": Former defender Daniel Cardoso
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has given insight into the culture in the club's senior squad, which has seen it slide into mediocrity.
As reported by Sports Brief, the 33-year-old is a free agent following the club's decision to release several players as it looks to address a seven-year-long drought without any trophies, under new coach Arthur Zwane. Cardoso made over 200 appearances for the Amakhosi, scoring 13 goals but losing in four finals in his time in Naturena.
Cardoso said being out in public and interacting with Chiefs supporters became increasingly awkward for him as the club slid into mediocrity.
