Kaizer Chiefs Beat Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby, Amakhosi Score Late to Claim League Double Over Buccaneers

Kaizer Chiefs have beaten Orlando Pirates 2-1.

The Amakhosi won the Soweto Derby, thanks to a late header by Eric Matoho.

Ina game that Sports Brief monitored, Reeve Frosler gave Chiefs the lead which was pegged back by Kwame Peprah, but Mathoho’s goal decided the tie. The start of the game lived up to the hype as both teams went at it from the get-go.

Within the first five minutes, it was end-to-end stuff as both teams looked to get the perfect start.

Chiefs looked the more threatening side and could have gone a goal ahead as early as the 10th minute. The Amakhosi countered a Pirates corner but could not find a final pass. Eight minutes later, they broke the deadlock thanks to a stunning strike from Reeve Frosler. Fed by Bernard Parker on the edge of the box, Frosler smashed the ball home past Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Pirates almost hit back immediately as Thembinkosi Lorch found Kwame Peprah in the box but the Ghanaian sent his effort wide.

A few minutes later, Kabelo Dlamini shot wide after he was found free by an Olisa Ndah longball. Dlamini had more time than he realised and rushed his shot, putting it wide. Pirates should have done better from the numerous chances they created but failed to find the back of the net. Keagan Dolly then scored from a tight angle in the 25th minute but he was adjudged to be offside. The replay showed that the call was a lot closer than first thought, and if the Video Assistant Referee was used in South Africa, it could have given the goal.

The rest of the half was also a tense affair but the biggest talking point was Khama Billiat’s injury. The midfielder was withdrawn on the 39th minute and replaced by Kearyn Baccus.

The second half started with Chiefs bringing on Leonardo Castro in the hopes of grabbing a second. The Colombian forward almost did just that, but he sent his effort over the bar. Just over 15 minutes later, Castro had to be stretchered off with a possible hamstring injury.

Pirates would finally make their chances count in the second half when Peprah scored from close range. A cross by Thabang Monare found Peprah who put the ball in the back of the net. There were some questions over whether the Ghanaian was offside, as once again, it was an extremely tight call.

Pirates continued to press for a second goal and came close on a few occasions.

With the rain pouring down and time ticking away, the game looked destined for a draw. At the 79th minute, Njabulo Blom fired a shot on target which was deflected over the bar. Dolly took the corner and put in a beautiful cross which Eric Matoho headed home. Three minutes later, Pirates almost equalized once again as Ndah’s header hit the post and looked to be heading into the back of the net before Brandon Petersen knocked it onto the underside of the crossbar, and it was eventually cleared.

With 30 seconds to go in the four minutes of added time, Petersen pulled off a brilliant save from close range to keep Pirates from drawing level. Pirates would live to rue their numerous missed chances as Chiefs would hold on for a big win and the bragging rights.

Bernard Parker was named the man of the match for his performance, which received a lot of praise from his coach.

The eagerly anticipated Sowetan Derby takes centre stage today when Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs at the Orlando Stadium. The Sowetan giants will meet for the 175th time today, but there are more than bragging rights to play for, Sports Brief earlier reported.

Both teams are level on points, 19 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns in first. However, Orlando Pirates has played three more games than their Sowetan rivals. Kaizer Chiefs are currently in third place in the DStv Premiership while Pirates occupy the fourth position.

The second-placed team at the end of the season gain qualification to the CAF Champions League while the third-placed team goes into the CAF Confederation Cup. Royal AM currently occupies the second spot but are only a point above the Sowetan teams.
