- Many fans were hoping to see Itumuleng Khune start between the sticks for the crunch game against Orlando Pirates
The Soweto Derby takes centre stage this weekend and many are hoping to see Itumuleng Khune start in goal for Kaizer Chiefs.
Coach Stuart Baxter, though, has confirmed that Brandon Petersen will wear the gloves for now.
Petersen has started the last two games for the Amakhosi, despite Khune showing improved form in the DStv Compact Cup. Speaking to iDiski Times, Baxter confirmed that the situation at Chiefs had not changed and that Petersen will continue to start, but admitted that competition for the spot is very high.
Former Amakhosi keeper, Aubrey Mathibe, believes that Petersen should get the start as well for the Derby, Soccer Laduma reported.
"I think Petersen can do well in this game. I don't think it will be difficult for him to play the derby because he's been around. He even played when Chiefs played Pirates in the Black Label Cup, so for him, it will be good to keep on playing because he is doing well for the team at the moment,” Mothibe said.
Khune’s exclusion will have many fans disappointed as they have often called for him to start more games. Baxter has praised Khune’s work ethic in training but also admitted that he couldn’t say when Itu will be giving a start again.
