  • The DStv Premiership title race is all but over, but it appears some reckon there is a small but still possible chance of a miracle
  • Runaway log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns need only win five matches from their remaining 10 to open the champagnes of celebrations
  • However, a hopeful Kaizer Chiefs pointed how a plausible scenario can add a twist to the season's ending that would go down in history

The DStv Premiership title race is approaching a faster than usual conclusion, but for some, hope springs eternal.

Mamelodi Sundowns last night came to within five wins of clinching a fifth consecutive league title last night after a 2-0 win over Chippa United at Loftus Versfeld. The victory took the Brazilians up to 47 points after 20 matches, 17 points ahead of second placed Orlando Pirates on 30, who have played a match less than them.

As seen on Sport24, Kaizer Chiefs has played four less matches than Sundowns having amassed 28 points. This shortage was due to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club in December, which laid dozens of playing and non-playing staff low, as reported by News24.

Chiefs fan @Ta_Fitty pointed out plausible but unlikely scenario on Twitter which sees the Amakhosi winning all four games in hand on Sundowns, moving up to second and to within seven points off the log leaders.

He said:

"I will officially admit Sundowns has won the league. When [PSL] DC comes back with the ruling, if they rule in our favour then we stand a very small chance granted we win the 4 games we have in hand. Then [Sundowns'] lead will be 7 points, which is something to play for."

He conceded that if the Premier Soccer League ruled against the club for not honouring two fixtures as a result of the outbreak, then it was tickets for his club's remote hope.

Social media was skeptical about his musings, whether it was Chiefs fans or rivals.

@MS_Sharpeville asked:

"Even in the unlikely event that you win 4 in row, you would need to win at least 6 of the last 10 games to stand a chance. That is 10 matches from here on."

@PF questioned Chief's consistency:

"Bafo, let's be honest: is Kaizer Chiefs capable of winning 4 games in a row?"

@BabakaSphile was realistic:

"They would need to win all their fourteen remaining games while Sundowns lose at least 3 games in their 10 remaining games... that is too much to ask from them."

@BonganiMbayi said:

"The League is over even if the ruling favours us. We won't [win] all those matches."

@mdolomba85 was sarcastic:

"I want the league to rule in your favour so that you can have that little hope. But by the time Mamelodi Sundowns reach 25 games then you will realised that you were never in it anyway."

Mamelodi Sundowns continues ruthless march towards title with easy win over Chippa United

Goals from Andile Jali and Teboho Mokoena were more than enough to see Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Chippa United 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld in the DStv Premiership.

As reported on Sports Brief, both goals by the home side were off deflections, with Jali's strike coming in the 43rd minute, while Mokoena's debut goal for his new club sealed matters in the 87th minute.

Aubrey Modiba was announced as the man-of-the-match after his impressive performance.
